This open issue of the Journal of Contemporary Painting compiles contributions that have been received through our general call for submissions or sought by editors. This call sought articles that explored the broad ‘territory and practice’ of contemporary painting, and we have therefore compiled articles that adhere to no strict theme. However, various articles can be seen to address ideas of expanded painting, what it means to be contemporary through a historical perspective, whilst we also include new scholarship on the work of Frank Bowling and James Bishop.
