A high-resolution atlas of the healthy human liver has been assembled using gene-expression profiling and spatial mapping of cells in samples from living donors. The atlas reveals human-specific patterns of gene expression in different zones and uncovers spatially resolved adaptations in liver cells from individuals with the disease steatosis. An atlas of liver cells serves as a reference to understand healthy human liver function and changes in conditions such as steatosis.
