Academic podcasting can function as scholarly contribution, not just science communication. This article introduces the concept of layered knowledge ecologies to show how audio, text, infrastructure, and metrics interact, enabling knowledge to emerge, circulate, and accrue impact. By distinguishing between communicating about scholarship and operating within it, the article positions podcasting as a dialogic, multimodal practice that supplements traditional outputs. Recognizing these ecologies challenges format-based hierarchies and invites evaluation models attuned to distributed, relational forms of scholarly value.
