Key Points

  • The aim is to explore how the endorsement of certain values affects ethical research behaviors among graduate students.
  • Analyzed baseline data from a university research ethics training program
  • Examined the relationship between NASEM values and QRPs
  • Investigated mediation effects of identity on ethical behavior
  • Stronger endorsement of NASEM values linked to lesser acceptance of QRPs
  • Identity inclusion acts as a mediator in the relationship
  • Initial evidence suggests the need for targeted training modules in ethics education

Abstract

Greater endorsement of NASEM values was associated with less endorsement of QRPs. This association was mediated by inclusion of these values in one's own identity. Results provide initial evidence for how institutes can foster psychological profiles of an ethical researcher in developing training modules for graduate students.
