As generative AI tools like ChatGPT become increasingly integrated into daily life, understanding how older adults interact with them is essential for inclusive design. This study explores the usability of ChatGPT among older adults, aiming to identify challenges and opportunities for improving accessibility and engagement. The research included pre-surveys, moderated usability testing, and a two-week diary study with four participants aged 65 and older. Findings revealed key usability barriers, including difficulty with onboarding, prompt formulation, and interface navigation. However, participants also expressed curiosity and enthusiasm, especially when engaging with familiar topics or when ChatGPT offered proactive, collaborative prompts. The study underscores the importance of guided onboarding, prompt scaffolding, and transparent data practices in designing AI systems for older users. These findings contribute to growing efforts in inclusive AI design and highlight the role of conversational AI in supporting older adults’ autonomy and creativity.
