Abstract

The standard of care for a large area of ductal carcinoma in situ within the breast is conventional mastectomy with or without immediate reconstruction. This case report describes Ireland’s first minimally invasive endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with breast implant. While it has been practised in Europe and elsewhere, this was Ireland’s first minimally invasive endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy. The reported benefits in published literature include higher wound-related satisfaction and aesthetics, improved post-operative pain and equivocal or better complication rates in comparison with conventional mastectomy. Importantly, it has been shown that the endoscopic approach has not negatively impacted on oncological outcomes to date.
