Key Points

  • The study aims to explore the organization of collagen fibers and elastic fibers in subcutaneous fascia.
  • Analyzed microfibrillar structures in relation to collagen fiber bundles
  • Investigated hierarchical arrangements at different scales
  • Developed a spatial model of fascial architecture
  • Supported the existence of a hierarchical organization in subcutaneous fascia
  • Demonstrated the association between fibrillin-rich microfibrils and collagen bundles
  • Provided a structural basis for future studies on fascial mechanics

Abstract

These findings support a hierarchical organization of subcutaneous fascia in which fibrillin-rich microfibrillar structures are repeatedly arranged in association with collagen fiber bundles across multiple scales. Together, our results suggest a spatial model of fascial architecture that provides a structural basis for future functional investigations of fascial mechanics.
