A Significant Geophysical Anomaly in Central India and its Relevance to Mineral Exploration

Abstract

- A 600 nT aeromagnetic anomaly, spreading over an area of about 100 km2 was recorded in the Narmada-Son rift zone near Gadarwara town in central India. Association of the ground magnetic anomaly with an equally wide self-potential anomaly gains importance in mineral exploration and its modelling reveals that the causative source is the same for both the anomalies. The regional gravity anomaly picture reveals structural disturbance and uplift of the region. The causative source, located under an alluvial cover of about 300 metres, has been interpreted to be a huge massive sulfide deposit. Test drilling by M/s. Pebble Creek Mining Ltd. (Canada) encountered Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) and subsequent geochemical studies on core samples support the view that the source is likely to be much similar to the Olympic Dam IOCG (Iron Oxide-Copper-Gold) deposit in South Australia. Further detailing of this area by geophysical and geochemical studies is envisaged to evaluate the mineral potential of this region.
