Abstract

Naturopathy and Yoga, recognized by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, represent integral components of India's traditional medical systems. Naturopathy is grounded in the belief that the human body possesses an inherent ability to heal itself when supported by favourable environmental and lifestyle conditions. Its core principles, including the emphasis on nutrition encapsulated in the motto "food is the best medicine" support the promotion of Organic agriculture and Sustainable food systems. Moreover, Naturopathy Institutions often contribute to biodiversity conservation by cultivating medicinal and indigenous plant species within their premises. Yoga, as a mind-body discipline with ancient roots, extends beyond physical well-being to influence mental clarity, behavioural discipline, and ecological consciousness. It fosters a heightened awareness that indirectly supports environmental health, aligning personal health practices with broader ecological values. This review critically examines the foundational principles of Naturopathy and Yoga in the context of sustainable development. It explores their contributions to key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). This review article also incorporates case studies and emerging scientific literature to evaluate the efficacy and applicability of these systems in contemporary health and environmental frameworks. By integrating traditional knowledge systems with modern sustainable development paradigms, Naturopathy and Yoga offer a holistic, low-cost, and preventive healthcare approach. This integrative model underscores the interdependence of human and environmental health and positions these practices as viable contributors to a resilient, sustainable, and health-promoting society.
