Abstract

Abstract The rapid expansion of digital payment systems has reshaped India’s financial architecture, particularly in rural regions where access to formal banking services was historically limited. The integration of digital platforms such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS), mobile Banking, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanisms has strengthened financial inclusion and enhanced economic participation in rural India. This paper examines how digital payments contribute to rural economic development by improving transparency, reducing transaction costs, empowering marginalized communities, and fostering entrepreneurship. The study also highlights key challenges including digital literacy gaps, cybersecurity risks, and infrastructural limitations. The paper concludes that digital payments have emerged as a transformative tool for rural empowerment, but sustainable growth requires continued policy support and digital capacity building.
