Evaluation of Recreational Green Spaces

Urban green spaces are not only essential for providing key ecosystem services, such as thermal regulation and biodiversity support, but are also crucial for the overall well-being and recreation of city dwellers. However, in many intermediate-sized cities in Latin America, their low quality and poor management hinder sustainable urban development. This study focuses on the planning of recreational green spaces (RGS) in the city of Loja, Ecuador. The analysis examined their availability, natural qualities, and suitability for social activities. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), 156 green spaces were identified, classified by type, and assessed using three indicators: spatial distribution, tree cover, and diversity of recreational facilities. The results show that these spaces are unevenly distributed and concentrated in parishes with low population density. Furthermore, tree cover is insufficient, and facilities are in uneven condition. These deficiencies highlight the lack of comprehensive planning and institutional continuity in the management of urban green areas.
