Abstract

Abstract: PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness and cost analysis of 0.06% and 0.03% trypan blue concentrations for staining the anterior capsule in mature cataract surgery. METHODS: This prospective study included 274 eyes of patients with mature cataract who underwent surgery at a tertiary eye care center. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group A received 0.06% trypan blue dye, and Group B received a diluted solution of 0.03% trypan blue dye. Various surgical parameters, including visibility of the anterior capsule during different stages, completion of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC), surgical time for CCC completion, CCC extension, and visibility during intraocular lens (placement), were assessed and compared. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 67.42 years. There were 154 females (56.2%) and 120 males (43.8%). Visibility of the anterior capsule during phacoemulsification was intermediate grade at a dye concentration of 0.03%. There was no significant difference in the surgical time for CCC completion between the groups. CCC extension was observed in two eyes (1.5%) in both groups. CONCLUSION: Trypan dye concentration of 0.03% was sufficient for effective anterior capsule staining in a mature cataract. Lower trypan blue concentrations offer cost advantages, particularly in developing countries, potentially reducing the overall cost of cataract surgery. The inclusion of an air bubble with the dye injection helps maintain the stability of the anterior chamber during surgery.
