Key Points

  • To highlight the potential for malignant melanoma to metastasize to the proximal humerus and discuss surgical options.
  • Case report of a 46-year-old woman with a history of choroidal melanoma.
  • Imaging findings identified a malignant tumor in the proximal humerus.
  • Patient underwent wide excision followed by reconstruction of the proximal humerus.
  • Successful identification of metastatic disease in the proximal humerus.
  • Surgical management led to meaningful functional recovery for the patient.

Abstract

Malignant melanoma rarely metastasizes to bone; when skeletal involvement occurs, it most commonly affects the axial skeleton. We report a rare case of a 46-year-old woman with a destructive lesion of the right proximal humerus. She had a primary choroidal melanoma of the right eye, which was treated with enucleation 4 years earlier. Given the patient’s oncologic history and imaging findings, a malignant tumor involving the proximal humerus was suspected. The patient underwent wide excision of the proximal humerus followed by reconstruction of the proximal humerus. This case highlights the possibility of malignant melanoma metastasis to the appendicular skeleton and should be considered in patients presenting with malignant bone lesions, especially if there is a history of melanoma. Early diagnosis and appropriate surgical management can provide effective palliation and meaningful functional recovery in selected patients, even in the setting of metastatic disease.
