Abstract

ABSTRACT This experiment investigated the effect of irrigation at times of 65% (early irrigation), 50% (timely irrigation), 35% (moderate drought stress) and 20% (severe drought stress) of the crop available water in soil (CAWS) and nitrogen fertilizer (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha −1 ) on purslane ( Portulaca oleracea L.) in a mini‐lysimeter condition. The results showed that irrigation time and nitrogen had significant effects on chlorophyll a , b , a + b and carotenoids, Fv / Fm , stomatal conductance, plant height, leaf dry weight, biological yield, grain yield, harvest index, number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule, thousand‐seed weight, nitrogen percentage (seed, stem and leaf), nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE), nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE) and nitrogen harvest index (NHI). At irrigation times of 65%, 50%, 35% and 20% CAWS, the grain yield was 1.13, 0.85 0.49, and 0.34 g plant −1 , respectively. Purslane had strong growth and high yields with early and timely irrigation. It also showed high tolerance to moderate to severe drought stresses.
