Abstract

abstract: Against narratives that equate technological significance with efficiency, scale, or commercial success, this article reframes Lin Yutang's 1947 MingKwai (明快) Chinese typewriter as a deliberate rejection of utility-driven design. Rather than interpreting the MingKwai as a precursor to later digital systems or China's contemporary information infrastructure, the article situates the device within Lin's intellectual project and historical context. It argues that the MingKwai's design—deeply rooted in existing technical precedents and Lin's "living philosophy"—sought to bridge writer and typist, expand access to writing, and resist subordination to both machine logic and state authority. The article presents the MingKwai as a democratic alternative within twentieth-century Chinese technological thought.
