Abstract

Iceberg lettuce is one of the most economically and nutritionally important vegetables, facing greater problems during storage and transportation. However, evidence suggests that harvesting at the optimal maturity stage and applying appropriate packaging materials are keys to reducing the loss of perishable crops. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of packaging on sensory quality, physiological, physical parameters, and shelf life of iceberg lettuce during cold storage. The experiments analysis was conducted at intervals of every 6 days for 33 days with three replications and evaluated in a CRD design corresponding to nine packaging materials. Nine types of packaging used were (without primary packaging samples in a carton box, a carton box glued with LDPE film, and a Danpla plastic box; wrapped samples by LDPE and green MAP separately and packed in a carton box, a carton box glued with LDPE film, and a Danpla plastic box). Quality parameters (sensory quality, respiration rates, weight loss, firmness, and decay rate) were analyzed. Samples without primary packaging packed in a carton box glued with LDPE film showed the best quality compared with the others. This work concludes that the iceberg lettuce Saula packed in a carton box glued with LDPE stored at 3 ± 2 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH) prolongs the shelf life for over one month with the lowest percentage of decay rate.
