synthon in metal-catalyzed cyclization reactions; (ii) the direct and efficient installation of an aldehyde group, a versatile synthetic handle and reactive motif enabling subsequent functionalization; and (iii) a subsequent dephthaloylation step that affords synthetically valuable cinnoline-4-carbaldehyde derivatives.
