This graduate project explores the possibility of turning food scraps from waste into resources to create a sustainable landscape. The landfill in Metro Vancouver will reach its maximum capacity within the decade; there is an urgency to tackle disposable organic waste. Rather than continuing to dispose of food waste in landfills, the project proposes treating them as landscaping resources. The design intervention is situated at École Alpha Elementary School in Burnaby, where the proximity between the school campus and surrounding residential neighborhoods presents an opportunity to challenge the conventional perception of food waste as undesirable; in fact, it could be aesthetically pleasing through the lens of landscape architecture.
