Abstract

This paper argues that the modern understanding of enterprise — as an instrument of profit extraction and shareholder value maximization — represents a fundamental category error with civilizational consequences. The enterprise, correctly understood, is not a profit machine. It is a system for the continuous creation of human value: a node in the living network of civilization that transforms labor, knowledge, trust, and time into regenerative societal wealth. Profit, within this framework, is not the telos of enterprise but its feedback signal — an indicator of whether value creation is sustainable, resonant, and genuinely reciprocal. When profit is mistaken for purpose, extraction replaces regeneration, and the slow decay of institutional trust, human dignity, and civilizational coherence follows. This paper develops a comprehensive framework — from the structural critique of extraction economics to the proposal of regenerative enterprise principles — grounded in systems theory, institutional economics, civilizational philosophy, and the historical record of human value structures. It concludes that the survival of coherent human civilization depends, in no small measure, on rebuilding enterprise as a force of genuine regeneration rather than acceleration extraction.
