In this essay we develop inferentialism as a methodologicalorientation for architectural practice by staging a philosophical confrontationwith the discipline’s inherited models of form-making. Beginningwith Kempelen’s chess-playing Turk as an early diagram of distributedcognition, the argument moves through Simondon’s critique of hylomorphism,the imposition of form upon passive matter, to demonstratewhy conventional design methods, including parametricism, fail to accountfor the epistemic conditions introduced by artificial intelligence. Simondon’sconcept of ontogenesis provides the theoretical scaffold: formcrystallizes from within, the way a crystal precipitates in a saturated solution,structure and content emerging simultaneously from the primordialsoup of data, energy, and potential. This framework dismantles theassumptions embedded in deterministic design paradigms and exposeshow schemas imposed onto material suppress its own tendencies, its ownmetastability, and its own capacity for individuation. The residual hylomorphismsof contemporary computational design, including top-downconstraint hierarchies and convergence toward predetermined formal objectives,reveal an inherited Rationalist commitment to optimization thatinference renders obsolete. The argument culminates in the articulationof inferentialism: a mode of practice where form, agency, and knowledgeemerge through probabilistic transductive processes distributed acrosshuman cognition, computational models, and material environments.
