Abstract

Sound wave interference patterns from simple musical instruments such as bagpipes can mimic the acoustic shadows of a ring of gigantic stones. Experiments with blindfolded volunteers demonstrate that the destructive interference nodes of a two-point sound wave interference pattern can be misinterpreted as acoustic shadows blocking the sound, and result in a “vision” of megalithic structures. Hear for yourself this mysterious auditory illusion that could have tricked the ears of our ancestors and served as a blueprint for Stonehenge and other megalithic circles, many of which are called “Pipers’ Stones.” Legends tell of two magic pipers who enticed merry maidens to dance in a circle, and they all turned to stone. Field testing experiments at prehistoric sites verify that real acoustic shadows radiating from actual megalithic circles mimic an interference pattern.
