Reduction of transmitted infrasound in a residential house via active vibration control of window rattling: A field experiment

Abstract

We developed an Active Vibration Control (AVC) system to reduce window vibration caused by infrasound, which leads to environmental problems such as window rattling. The system is a single-input single-output feedback system utilizing a self-made inertial exciter as the control source and a laser displacement gauge as the error sensor. In our previous study, we confirmed that applying AVC for the window in a test house reduced both the window vibration induced by infrasound and the resulting indoor infrasound transmission. In this study, we evaluated the system’s practical applicability through an experiment in a residential house room. The room had a waist–height window facing outdoors and a partition door connecting to a hallway. A 10 Hz pure tone was generated outside to excite the window. The AVC systems were attached to both sliding panes. As a result, the window vibration was reduced by over 10 dB. Correspondingly, the transmitted infrasound within the room was also reduced by over 10 dB. Consequently, the rattling noise produced by both the window and the interior door was reduced by over 5 dB in A-weighted SPL, resulting in an audible improvement. These results confirm the practical applicability of the AVC system in residential environments.
