The augmented multimedia principle is a theoretical extension of Mayer’s multimedia principle to immersive three-dimensional media. While the original multimedia principle focuses on the dual-channel processing of verbal and visual information in 2D media, immersive virtual reality introduces an additional dimension: depth. By leveraging depth perception and body motion, learners can construct better integrated mental models of the learning material, thus enhancing learning. This concept note defines the augmented multimedia principle as a framework in which depth and body motion in virtual reality (VR) are treated as key components of the learning process. The augmented multimedia principle was first introduced in the context of VR language learning and subsequently applied and empirically investigated in immersive activities designed to enhance grammar comprehension and vocabulary memorization.
