Key Points

  • This research aims to investigate how the format of preaching messages affects psychological responses and persuasive effectiveness, applying the Expanded Elaboration Likelihood Model (E-ELM).
  • Conducted an experiment with 200 Christian adults comparing narrative and non-narrative sermon formats.
  • Explored the moderating effect of source expertise on psychological engagement and persuasion pathways.
  • Analyzed the mediated relationships between immersion, identification, attitudes, and behavioral intentions.
  • Narrative sermons significantly increased audience immersion compared to non-narrative formats, supporting a full mediation structure.
  • Expertise moderated the paths of immersion to identification and identification to attitudes, weakening these effects at higher expertise levels.
  • High perceived source expertise allows for message acceptance without relying on immersion and identification processes.
