Abstract

In this paper, a polyester based MIMO wearable textile antenna is designed, fabricated and tested for wearable applications. The compact size and high isolation 2 × 2 antenna operate at Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band at 2.45 GHz. Overall antenna dimensions are 56.80 × 121.60 mm2 with 16.80 mm inter antenna spacing. Since mutual coupling has been a great challenge in designing MIMO antennas, therefore to improve isolation between elements, a strip has been used for further isolation improvement. A high isolation of approximately − 30 dB is achieved between the antenna elements, ensuring minimal mutual coupling. The antenna exhibits good impedance matching at 2.45 GHz and maintains high isolation (> 20 dB) between elements even in proximity to the body phantom, confirming the effectiveness of the decoupling structure under body loading conditions. SAR analysis shows values ranging from 0.935 W/kg to 1.271 W/kg for the proposed designs, which are within the permissible safety limits for wearable applications. Further, bending analysis confirms that the antenna maintains stable resonance and acceptable isolation under different bending radii, demonstrating its robustness for wearable applications. Results from both simulations and measurements show that the antenna is well-suited for use in close quarters with the human body and its low SAR value lends credence to the idea that it could be useful in wearable technology.
