Key Points

  • The aim is to assess the size, growth, and bibliometric performance of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) publications.
  • Conducted multiple searches using Google Scholar, Dimensions, and OpenAlex with nine keyword combinations
  • Performed additional searches in Scopus and Web of Science
  • Analyzed indexed research since the early 2000s to determine the volume and influence of SoTL publications
  • Exponential growth in indexed SoTL publications since 2000, with up to 110,000 items documented by Google Scholar
  • Top cited SoTL publications reported strong median citation rates, indicating significant scholarly impact
  • Identified influential journals and authors beyond what prior studies captured using curated databases

Abstract

Limited narrative reviews and bibliometric studies of SoTL were extended by a study of the size, growth, and bibliometric performance analysis of published research using three of the most comprehensive, next-generation database services. Multiple searches of Google Scholar, Dimensions, and OpenAlex were performed using nine keyword search combinations. Additional searches of ScopusÒ and Web of ScienceÔ were also performed. There has been exponential growth in indexed SoTL research since the early 2000s with up to 110,000 articles, chapters, and books indexed by Google Scholar. This body of research is larger than previously documented by reviews and bibliometric studies of curated bibliometric database services. The top cited SoTL publications had median citations and citation rates indicating strong scholarly usage. This study confirmed influential SoTL journals, authors, but also identified additional important journals and authors not captured in past studies using curated databases.
