Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate whether home-based pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) treatment has an effect on improving the quality of life (QoL) in older adult women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) complaints. This study consisted of women aged 65 and over who were diagnosed with SUI or MUI based on urodynamics. A home-based, self-administered PFMT program was applied to each woman for 12 weeks. Before and after treatment, symptoms were assessed with QoL questionnaires, and pelvic floor muscle strength was assessed with the vaginal digital palpation method. Forty-seven women with SUI and 34 women with MUI completed the home-based PFMT program. After treatment, significant improvements were found in urinary incontinence-related QoL questionnaire scores in both groups of women, with a greater increase in the SUI group, and similar increases in pelvic floor muscle strength. Home-based PFMT is effective in improving short-term QoL symptoms in older adult women with SUI and MUI.
