This presentation explores an immersive listening experience set within an imaginary environment, based on a 3D acoustic reconstruction of the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in Rome. Central to this study is the faux dome painted by Jesuit brother Andrea Pozzo in 1685; this canvas masterpiece visually enhances the Baroque architecture of the church, while shaping the perceived sonic environment within this site. By analysing the dome’s specific geometry, we developed an acoustic and visual simulation that reproduces the unique site-specific atmosphere of this illusory space. The virtual reconstruction of the church by means of Odeon Room Acoustic SW by Odeon A/S (Denmark) allows us to enrich our knowledge through an immersive listening experience. For this purpose, among the anechoic audio tracks available in the Odeon database, we selected a number of tracks appropriate to the context of a large church with the organ: tenor voice, organ music, viola music, oboe music. These echo-free audio tracks were convolved with the binaural impulse response BRIR, having the right and left channels separated, obtained from the simulation at the receiver positions. This operation is called auralization. The resulting immersive listening experience was implemented for the real church with the canvas and for the illusory church with the virtually reconstructed dome.
