Abstract

The rubber industry in the Philippines plays a vital role in rural livelihoods but remains highly vulnerable to plant diseases that reduce productivity and latex quality. Recent outbreaks of Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease in major producing areas such as Cotabato Province have intensified the need for timely and accessible agricultural information. In many rural communities, rubber farmers increasingly turn to social media platforms as alternative sources of disease-related knowledge due to limited access to formal extension services and scientific materials. This study examines the use of social media as an information source on Pestalotiopsis disease among rubber farmers in Cotabato Province. Using a descriptive exploratory approach, the study highlights how digital platforms contribute to awareness, early identification, and preliminary management practices related to the disease. Findings suggest that social media serves as a significant informal knowledge channel, complementing traditional information networks. However, the reliability and accuracy of shared content remain key concerns affecting decision-making among farmers. Strengthening digital literacy and integrating verified agricultural information into online platforms are essential to improve disease management outcomes in rubber farming communities
