Abstract

Abstract Specimens of an unknown Ipini were trapped during 2023–2024 exotic forest pest surveys in County Clare, Ireland. This non‐native species was provisionally identified as Pseudips mexicanus (Hopkins, 1906) with morphological identification keys. However, damaged specimens could not be confidently identified to the species level. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences, including most Pseudips species, confidently grouped the specimens from Ireland with P. mexicanus and confirmed the initial identification. The low phylogenetic resolution among Irish and Mexican specimens prevented assessment of a specific origin of the introduction. The minimal nucleotide difference among specimens from Ireland suggested a limited introduction of individuals.
