Abstract

Global warming is profoundly transforming glaciated mountain landscapes, with significant consequences for the environment, safety, and tourism. In this context, scientific outreach and conscious engagement with the territory are essential tools to raise public awareness and promote sustainable behaviour. This paper presents the design and implementation of the Stoppani- Desio Glaciological Trail, an educational route developed to guide visitors through the ongoing transformations of the Forni Glacier, located within the Stelvio National Park. The trail features thirteen observation points, each corresponding to a historical position of the glacier front over the past 3000 years. At each point, visitors find a metal plaque with a QR code that provides access to multilingual content (texts, images, videos) highlighting glaciological, natural, and cultural aspects of the site. Signage is designed to be accessible, adaptable, and low-impact, while the path is structured to ensure safety and inclusivity, accommodating users of various skill levels and abilities. The project integrates scientific research, environmental conservation, and innovative communication tools (e.g., virtual reality and interactive maps), making the trail an open-air laboratory. Its development follows a collaborative governance model involving academic institutions, local authorities, Alpine guides, and volunteers, ensuring long-term maintenance and monitoring. The Stoppani Desio Trail serves as a replicable model for other Alpine areas, demonstrating how sustainable tourism, environmental education, and the promotion of glaciological heritage can be effectively combined in the face of rapid climate change.
