Abstract

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is one of the most celebrated franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having won the title in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. This study analyzes CSK's ball-by-ball match data from IPL seasons 2021–2026 comprising 283,678 delivery records to identify the root cause of performance decline and project a conditional 2027 outlook. Using Python, Pandas, and Matplotlib in Google Colab, the analysis examines win percentage trends, death bowling economy, powerplay performance, toss impact, and individual player contributions. The Pearson correlation coefficient between death bowling economy and win percentage was computed at r = -0.91. The central finding is that CSK's championship outcomes are determined by death overs economy rate — seasons below 10.5 resulted in titles, above 11.0 resulted in elimination. Conditionally, if CSK acquires a specialist death bowler with economy below 9.5 for 2027, win percentage is projected to recover from 40% to 65%+.
