This paper reframes latency as a productive temporality in the formation of intellectual fields. Epistemic Latency names the interval between internal coherence and external recognition; the Latency Dividend names the value generated during that interval. Rather than treating delayed recognition as deficit, the paper argues that latency can support conceptual autonomy, structural hardening, resistance to premature capture and archival depth. Invisible colleges, para-institutional infrastructures, open repositories, blogs and independent platforms can allow a formation to mature before institutional visibility arrives. In AI-mediated knowledge environments, latency also changes shape as machines may detect recurrent patterns before formal disciplines recognise them.
