Abstract

Abstract The Palaeozoic Table Mountain Group covers most of the Cape Peninsula and is located in the Western Branch of the Cape Fold Belt (CFB). Mapping has shown these rocks to be heterogeneously deformed in roughly north-northeast–south-southwest trending linear belts of folds with associated low-angle faults. Both types of structure are brittle in nature. That deformation is interpreted as being part of a thin-skinned fold-and-thrust system active during the Permo-Triassic Cape Orogeny and probably formed at a crustal depth of 1 to 10 km.
