The Psychology Board of Australia has released updated Professional Competencies for Psychologists, effective from 1 December 2025. These competencies recognise the importance of culturally responsive practice when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Cultural responsiveness is embedded across all of the competencies, with Competency 8 specifically dedicated to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This commentary paper focuses on the third and eighth competencies and presents the Model of Cultural Responsiveness as a framework for practitioners towards meeting this competency. The domains of this model which comprise the Cultural Responsiveness Assessment Measure (CRAM) are applied to both competencies, and the CRAM is discussed as a self-assessment tool for practitioners seeking to meet these new competencies. This paper has application for practitioners, educators, trainees and researchers.
