Key Points

  • The aim is to design high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles and explore their novel catalytic functions.
  • Utilized rod-shaped CeO2 for hydrogen spillover to reduce Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Pd2+ ions simultaneously.
  • Developed HEA sub-nanoclusters below 1 nm using a specific oxidizing environment.
  • Created HEA@Rh nanoparticles through galvanic displacement for enhanced catalytic activity.
  • HEA sub-nanoclusters showed significantly improved catalytic activity compared to single-metal Pd nanoparticles in NO reduction.
  • Distinct oxidation-reduction responsiveness correlated with reversible structural changes under NO/H2 conditions was observed.
  • Developed HEA@Rh nanoparticles exhibited further increased catalytic activity due to controlled noble metal composition.
