• Micromorphological analysis of Stone Age/Palaeolithic bedding is globally rare. • Samples from ‘grass mats’ include several microfacies with no published equivalents. • Variation in previously reported microfacies may reflect site-specific behaviour. • Microscale properties reflect construction, maintenance and anthropogenic disturbance. • Indications of short intensive occupation events during periods of limited occupation.
