• We estimated canal evaporation in an arid urban area with an isotope enrichment model. • Annual evaporative losses of 5.2 ± 2.3% and 3.3 ± 1.5% were obtained in open canals. • High seasonality was noted in canal evaporation, which a maximum value of 8.5%. • Isotope-based evaporation estimates were consistent with pan evaporation measurements.
