Sustainability of Japanese Traditional Architecture Viewed Through Visualization of Seismic Behavior

YTYuya Takaiwa

Key Points

  • This study aims to clarify the seismic behavior of traditional Japanese architecture, particularly focusing on the role of brackets in these structures.
  • Dynamic loading tests were conducted on an ancient architectural bracket (斗栱)
  • Motion capture technology was utilized to visualize the bracket's behavior under dynamic loading
  • Results from the ancient bracket were compared with those of a newly constructed bracket made from the same specifications and materials.
  • The ancient bracket exhibited comparable seismic characteristics to a newly constructed one after approximately 150 years.
  • It was suggested that the bracket's design, primarily relying on friction resistance, minimizes the impact of wood aging.
