This paper compares the Beat Generation in the United States and kasutori culture in Japan, showing that despite arising from different postwar conditions --affluence and poverty -- both shared anti-establishment and anti-conformist attitudes. Through deviant practices such as drug use, sexuality, and wandering, they sought liberation. It argues that their embrace of madness, deviance, and carnal expression shaped later countercultural movements.
