For most of the twentieth century, the deepest questions in physics were answered by increasing control: to probe nature more finely was to build a larger, colder, more precise machine, and a single instrument could generate a phenomenon, hold it under command, measure it, and confirm it in one stroke. This essay argues that after the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 that unity has fractured. The most controlled experiments now return firm null results, cooled anomalies, and tensions whose limiting factor is theoretical rather than experimental, while the live pressures on our picture of the universe arrive from systems we can observe but cannot prepare or repeat: the accelerating cosmos, the relic radiation of the early universe, and the rare high-energy messengers that fall on Earth unbidden. The frontier has not so much moved from the laboratory to the sky as split between them, with observation increasingly generating discovery, theory translating it, laboratories adjudicating it, and concordance across independent traces stabilizing it. Drawing on the philosophy of the historical sciences, the essay contends that fundamental physics is quietly adopting the evidential logic of geology and paleontology, and it states plainly the conditions under which its central claim would be proven wrong.
