Epithelial tissue is a fundamental component of the human body that covers external surfaces, lines internal organs and cavities, and forms glands. The aim of this study was to review the major types of epithelial tissue, their structural characteristics, physiological functions, and clinical significance. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using scientific textbooks and peer-reviewed articles related to histology, anatomy, and pathology. The analysis revealed that epithelial tissues are classified into simple, stratified, pseudostratified, and transitional categories based on cellular arrangement and morphology. Each epithelial type demonstrates specialized structural adaptations that support functions such as protection, absorption, secretion, filtration, transport, and sensory perception. The findings also indicate that epithelial tissues possess remarkable regenerative abilities and play a central role in maintaining homeostasis. Furthermore, abnormalities in epithelial structure and function contribute to the development of numerous diseases, including inflammatory disorders and carcinomas. Understanding epithelial tissue organization is therefore essential for medical education, clinical practice, and biomedical research. The study concludes that epithelial tissues are indispensable for normal physiological function and represent a critical area of investigation in modern medicine.
