Revisiting Yuen Ren Chao's phonological theory and phonetic descriptions on Modern Mandarin

ABSTRACT: Yuen Ren Chao (1892–1982) was a pioneer in the field of Modern Chinese linguistics in the first half of the 20th century. This article aims to provide a brief overview of his phonological theory and analyze the validity of his views. Based on some current phonological theories, this article attempts to meticulously evaluate the appropriateness of Yuen Ren Chao's linguistic research on phonemic function and his assertions regarding consonants, vowels, tones, stress, and other phonetic and phonological aspects of Modern Chinese. 摘要: 赵元任是 20 世纪上半叶汉语语言学研究的奠基人。本文旨在简要介绍 他的现代汉语语音和音系理论，分析其观点合理与否。本文尝试基于 当前音系理论，客观评价赵元任有关音位功能的普通语言学理论研究 以及他有关现代汉语辅音、元音、声调、重音等语音学、音系学相关 主张的妥当性。
