The Leipzig Conservatory in Mykola Lysenko’s Creative Biography: The Formation of the Ukrainian Musical Style within the European Context

This study examines the exhibition “Mykola Lysenko in Leipzig,” which for the first time presents autographs of the composer’s works from his Leipzig period, drawn from the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian Culture, along with photographs of significant historical landmarks of that era. Although numerous scholarly works address different aspects of Lysenko’s activity, his Leipzig period remains the least explored. Newly discovered archival documents add important details to this biographical chapter and confirm the exceptional importance of the Leipzig Conservatory (founded by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy) in shaping his creative style and professional skills. They also highlight Lysenko’s contribution to the development of Ukrainian music pedagogy and musical culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
