Key Points

  • This work aims to analyze mathematical models to better understand Ebola virus transmission dynamics.
  • Review of compartmental epidemiological models
  • Application of deterministic and stochastic modeling techniques
  • Use of data from the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa
  • Comparison of modeling results and approaches
  • Deterministic models provided consistent predictions while stochastic models accounted for randomness in transmission.
  • Different models highlighted various mechanisms of disease spread.
  • Assessment revealed distinct advantages and limitations of each modeling approach.

Abstract

This work focuses on the study and application of mathematical models to understand the dynamics of infectious diseases, specifically the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Throughout the study, we review and apply compartmental epidemiological models (deterministic and stochastic models) featuring different characteristics. As the basis for our study, we use data recorded during the EVD epidemic in West Africa in 2014. By applying various models that describe the spread of this disease in different ways, we hope to understand the mechanisms and advantages of each model, as well as assess the quality of the results obtained with them and the parties involved in the modeling process.
