Key Points

  • To explore the relationship between parent-adolescent involvement and sleep problems in youth with clinical sleep issues.
  • Assess youth presenting with sleep disturbances
  • Evaluate levels of caregiver communication and parental monitoring
  • Analyze associations between these factors and sleep outcomes
  • Open communication with caregivers correlates with improved sleep outcomes
  • Higher parental monitoring is linked to worsening specific sleep aspects
  • Findings suggest the importance of family dynamics in clinical interventions for sleep issues

Abstract

Findings indicate that in youth presenting with sleep disturbances, more open communication with caregivers as reported by adolescents is associated with better sleep outcomes, while parental monitoring showed inverse associations with specific aspects of sleep. As these findings emerged in a sample experiencing clinical sleep problems, family communication and monitoring should continue to be explored in clinical samples to determine their relevance in clinical interventions.
