Ecological Heritage: The Role of Women in Environmental Sustainability in Uttarakhand

AbstractWomen play a vital role in developing and implementing ecologically sustainable practices for managing ecosystems and preserving the environment in many areas throughout the world, including rural communities in Uttarakhand. This paper examines the changing contributions of women in maintaining ecological balance, from traditional environmentally friendly practices to contemporary environmental activism in Uttarakhand. The study utilises secondary data sources such as peer-reviewed articles, books, reports, historical documents, and case studies to study how women have contributed to and participated in Uttarakhand’s Ecological History, with an emphasis on the Chipko Movement of the 1970s.Women in Uttarakhand have traditionally contributed to society by collecting water, gathering wood, tending to their own farming efforts and developing an understanding of the environment. While there is evidence of an increase in opportunities for women to be involved in leadership positions in the past few years, many barriers continue to limit women’s ability to reach their full potential and be fully engaged in decision-making processes. These barriers include the existing gender inequalities, limited access to formal education for women, and limited opportunities for women to engage in the decision-making process regarding land and resource utilisation.The purpose of this research is to promote a recognition of the value of women’s contributions to environmental conservation in order to increase the potential of reaching sustainable development within the State of Uttarakhand. The ultimate goal of this study is to provide recommendations that will encourage the active engagement of women in ecological preservation and to include their knowledge and leadership in programs designed to conserve natural resources, so that they may participate in future sustainable development endeavours in the State of Uttarakhand.
