This paper provides a comprehensive review of the role of ChatGPT in education, exploring its potential advantages as well as the associated challenges. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is a generative AI system rooted in deep learning principles that produces human-like responses, facilitating interactive and personalized learning experiences. Key benefits include round-the-clock access, support for English as a Second Language learners, assistance with research and writing, inclusivity for students with disabilities, and time-saving tools for educators. Moreover, ChatGPT fosters lifelong learning by offering a more flexible and learner-centric approach compared to traditional classroom settings. However, this review also addresses critical concerns such as threats to academic integrity, the risk of misinformation, overreliance on technology, digital inequities, data privacy issues, biases in AI-generated outputs, and the potential for teacher displacement. It underscores the importance of establishing clear policies, promoting AI literacy, and employing responsible integration strategies through case studies and best practices. Ultimately, ChatGPT presents both opportunities and challenges: when used appropriately, it can enhance education by making it more inclusive, personalized, and creative, without compromising academic quality and ethical standards.
