A Detailed Historic Building Recording survey was carried out on Drummond Arms Hotel and an Enhanced Historic Building Recording was carried out on its associated outbuildings which included a photographic, written and drawn record and is based on the Association of Local Government Archaeology Officers (Scotland) guidelines, Historic Buildings Recording Guidance for Curators, Consultants and Contractors (2013). This equates to a Level 2 record as per Historic England (2016) guidelines. The exteriors of the buildings were examined, described and photographed. Existing architect's exterior elevations and floor plans were supplied and used as the basis for the drawn record. The Drummond Arms Hotel was constructed between 1871-1872 and remodelled in 1874 as a hotel and a branch of the Commercial Bank of Scotland. Modifications to the building were designed by bank architect David Rhind in a Second French Empire or Napoleon III style with Mansard style roofs, dormers and pavilion towers. Closure of the hotel and its subsequent abandonment and general lack of maintenance has led to substantial weather damage which has compromised the structural integrity of the interior of both the hotel and outbuildings. Structural condition assessments carried out by Narro Associates in 2020, 2024 and 2025 concluded that much of the interior was unsafe and that some of the outbuildings carried an asbestos risk. Therefore, the interiors did not form part of the survey.
