This paper explores the dynamics of territorial control exercised by armed groups – factions and militias – in the outskirts and favelas of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The purpose was to investigate and describe the current dynamics of ‘siege’ produced by different armed groups, their effects on local sociability, and the production of precariousness to which residents of these locations are subjected.
